Luyang Folk Dance Group

Monday, 4 April 2006 and Tuesday, 12 April 2006

Visited the Luyang Folk Dance Group at the Luyang Community hall. It felt good to be back in the hall, where I was teaching from April 2003 to January 2005, and I am happy for the opportunity to meet with the students that I taught there before as well as meeting the new students. Their classes are on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 0800-1000 am.




Annie made a lovely chocolate cake, topped up with fresh cream, for the morning of the 4 April!

The ladies were pratising 3 dances, that would be presented as welcoming dances in their 3rd anniversary celebration on the 1st May. This is a Chinese folk dance, clicking 2 small cups (bowls) on each side of the hand.

Likas Galaxy 1st Anniversary - 2006

The Likas Galaxy dance group celebrated their 1st anniversary this morning, at their place of practice (Likas Antarabangsa hall). It was not as big as the Luyang hall but it was cosy enough for the people who gathered there.

Games time! Let us see which team can make-up most beautifully. There were 2 'customers' in each team. Each team member was only allowed to touch on one feature of the face. Someone would draw the eyebrow, another would apply the lipstick, another would apply the eyeshadow, power the face, etc. etc.

SUPP's Chinese New Year Dance Gathering

It took me a year to decide which dance group I wanted to belong to in Miri. Have to get back to my dancing or I else I will die of boredom and lack of exercise! There are many groups available, where some of my old friends are. I had joined their dancing classes a couple of times but where did I ended up in? In a group that I have never been to! In a group where I don't even though a single soul! Why? It is nearest to my home - with the rising cost of petrol, this is much more economical. And also the timing of their classes suited me.

Nobody came to talk with me me the first time I walked in the class, although some of them smiled when I greeted them!! I think I was like a newly transplanted organ in a body experiencing rejection! That was on the 5 January! But since that day, the body has accepted me. I am enjoying myself getting to know them. This is my first social gathering with them - my new friends! We had fun playing games. I was even made a leader of a team - not bad for a new member, huh?

I was selected to join 5 others to perform a fan dance in a Chinese New Year party on the 26 February but I had to turn it down because Sunday is my rest day!! Any other day of the week - no problem!

Miri Hilltop Garden Chinese New Year Party

4 F.ebruary 2006

It was a Chinese New Year Party organised by the Hilltop Garden Neighbourhood Committee. Two weeks ago, a member of their dance group presented me with a ticket to join in their gathering. I am glad I went. I had an enjoyable time. I met a principal and also a maths teacher from my former school. I enjoyed the food and most of all the dancing.



And I won a lucky draw too. The lucky number was 97 and I got an 'ang pow' of 5 Ringgit.

KK Churn Ing and Labuan Social Integration

12 November 2004

Brought the KK Churn Ing dance group, on their first visit outside Kota Kinabalu, to visit the Labuan dance group. Labuan is 30 minutes flight by Boeing from Kota Kinabalu. This was one of the dances that we presented "Spanish Rose".

Levantando Las Manos

23 October 2004

This was a hot number. The tempo was fast. We may not be in our 20's but the ladies just love this dance and they could do it. We were peforming "Levantando Las Manos" at the Community Policing (Police) gathering for the Luyang Neighbourhood.

KK Sunrise - 1st Anniversary

4 September 2004

There were now more than 5-10 dancing groups in Kota Kinabalu. Some are purely line dancing while others like the KK Sunrise and ourselves have incorporated different types of dancing in our classes. One of the two dances "Tu Chien Hua" that we performed at the KK Sunrise Dance Group 1st anniversary celebration, using 2 scarfs.

KK Luyang/Churn Ing and Miri Social Integration

By this time, I was teaching 2 groups - the KK Luyang and KK Churn Ing. Both these groups combined to welcome their first visitors from outside Kota Kinabalu. The visiting dance group were from the oil town of Miri but not from my parent dance group! The Miri Hill Top Garden dance group presenting their "Kung Fu" dance.
