KK Churn Ing and Labuan Social Integration

12 November 2004

Brought the KK Churn Ing dance group, on their first visit outside Kota Kinabalu, to visit the Labuan dance group. Labuan is 30 minutes flight by Boeing from Kota Kinabalu. This was one of the dances that we presented "Spanish Rose".

Levantando Las Manos

23 October 2004

This was a hot number. The tempo was fast. We may not be in our 20's but the ladies just love this dance and they could do it. We were peforming "Levantando Las Manos" at the Community Policing (Police) gathering for the Luyang Neighbourhood.

KK Sunrise - 1st Anniversary

4 September 2004

There were now more than 5-10 dancing groups in Kota Kinabalu. Some are purely line dancing while others like the KK Sunrise and ourselves have incorporated different types of dancing in our classes. One of the two dances "Tu Chien Hua" that we performed at the KK Sunrise Dance Group 1st anniversary celebration, using 2 scarfs.

KK Luyang/Churn Ing and Miri Social Integration

24 August 2004

By this time, I was teaching 2 groups - the KK Luyang and KK Churn Ing. Both these groups combined to welcome their first visitors from outside Kota Kinabalu. The visiting dance group were from the oil town of Miri but not from my parent dance group! The Miri Hill Top Garden dance group presenting their "Kung Fu" dance.

After a year in Luyang

12 July 2004
It was over a year in the Luyang group. The membership has doubled. Another year of fun, laughter and social integration in and outside the city. We have learnt how to use fans of different types, scarfs, umbrella, chopsticks and spoons.

Practising a long fan.

KK Luyang Dance Group

10 April 2003

I had resigned from the Foochow Association and started a new group in the Luyang housing area. I was getting more pressure instead of pleasure at the Foochow Association and it was not my ideal cup of tea as regards to dancing. Our first social activity was a trip to botanical garden on the 22 March. My friend from the Miri Che Sing Khor Moral Uplifting Society came again and gave us a week's dance course.

Practising a newly learnt fan dance. I love fan dances. They are so graceful.

Practising for Women's International Day 2003

6 March 2003

The dance group had presented 2 dances at the Foochow Association's Chinese New Year celebration on the 8 February and 2 dances at their Women's Day celebration on the 2 March. On the 8 March, 2 dances were presented at a public dinner/dance to celebrate the Women's International Day.

Dancing at the Foochow Association

1 May to 5 December 2002

This was not as relaxing as we were at the Bukit Padang park. There, it was only for 6 hrs per week of morning exercise but here it was more than just exercise. There were functions that we are obligated to perform. Most of the ladies were mothers who were full time homekeepers and so they were able to come on any other days to practise and to perfect their movements when their husbands and children have gone to work and schools. And they don't mind putting extra time and effort. They enjoyed it and at the same time improved themselves.

Their first exposure was the social integration with the Miri Che Sing Khor Moral Uplifting Society. Their knowledge and skill were further enhanced by a friend from Miri who came and taught us new dances for a week in September. They improved their confidence when they performed 2 dances at the dual celebration of Mother and Father's Day on the 8 June, 2 dances at the Mooncake Festival on the 20 September and 1 dance at the 20 anniversary of the Foochow Association on the 29 November. The ladies also presented 3 dances at the KK Mandarin Toastmasters' Installation Banquet for the year 2002 on the 10 August.

The 2 highlights of the year was the social integration with the Lawas dance group on the 25 November, followed with another social integration (and also the last event for the year) with the Bintulu dance group on the 5 December.

KK Foochow and Miri Social Integration

28 May 2002

No more dancing at the Bukit Padang Park anymore. We had been adopted by the Women section of the Foochow Association as of 1 May 2002. Rain or shine, we had a roof over our heads!! My parent dance group of the Miri Che Sing Khor Moral Uplifting Society made their first social visit to a Kota Kinabalu dance group, formed by her own child, yours truly. It was an eye opener for the KK ladies - their first visitors! Doing a Chinese folk dance "Flower and Leaf" using dual fans.

More dancing at the Park

22 January 2002

This was one the last few pictures taken of us, dancing at the park. The number of ladies have grown. The men in Kota Kinabalu were too shy to join!

Dancing in the Park

It was a quiet 1999, no social integration, except for our own gatherings in town. My involvement in the dance group of Miri Che Sing Khor Moral Uplifting Society ended when my family moved to Kota Kinabalu (Sabah) in December 1999.

I could not believe my ears when I was told that there was no folk dancing class in KK. I could not comprehend why folk dancing was not available in this state of Sabah compared to the state of Sarawak where it could be found in almost every town! Some towns have even more than 1 dance group. There was a class in KK but it was not open to the public. It was run by a private teacher who only take and train young students for paid public performances. I just wanted to join an ordinary dance class where I could socialise, dance for fun and exercise.

Walking in a park one morning, I came across a group of people doing tai-chi and decided to join them. The place was lovely with the trees around and it was still shady after the tai-chi session was over. I told myself that if there was no folk dance class, I will dance myself here after the tai-chi exercise in this park. I don't want to forget the dances that I have learnt.

Soon after the tai-chi friends had left the next morning, I inserted my tape in the small cassette player that I had brought, took out my fans and dance, with my back towards people who walk past. I don't care whether I look good or not, but I was too shy to face them!

The ladies who joined me as the days rolled by told me that they were so happy for the joy and fun that folk dancing had brought to them.

Miri and Serian/Kuching Social Integration

11-13 May 1998

We visited our friends in the capital of Sarawak. Took us 55 minutes by Boeing from Miri to Kuching. This was a Chinese 1 fan dance "Flowers of the Spring" that the Miri and the Serian group did together on the 11 May. We met with the Kuching group on the 12 May.

Miri and Limbang/Lawas Social Integration

Another year passed. Our Kuching and Singapore friends visited and taught us some dances. Year 1996, we had an enjoyable time visiting the Bintulu and Sibu groups in the north. Year 1997, we decided to go south for a change.

21 May 1997, Limbang. Another enjoyable bus ride. A picture of a dual fan dance entitled "Singing in the Dusk" that was presented.

22 May 1997 - Lawas.
They came to visit us in 1995. It was our turn to pay them a visit. Picture of our group taken in the little town's garden.

Miri and Bintulu/Sibu Social Integration

The dance group in the Miri Che Sing Khor Moral Uplifting Society was now in her 3rd year. We had a visit from the Lawas dance group in August 1995. We performed at the Senior Citizens dinner party in October 1995. The members came regularly to the classes. Time for more events and experience. We decided to visit other dance groups in the state.

5 April 1996 - Bintulu. Took 3 hours bus ride from Miri to Bintulu. Nelly and me doing the 'Blue Tango'.

6 April 1996 - Sibu. Another 3 hours bus ride from Bintulu to Sibu. One of the dances persented - a Middle-East folk dance entitled "Easy Step", done in circle formation.

EM End of Year Party 1995

9 December 1995

It was party time after a year's hard work. There were food, drinks, long service emblems presentation, singing, acting, games and of course dancing.

Our own style - Mexican Dance

Jungle Dance? No! We called it a Regay dance!

One of the items in the program was talentime contest. My friends and me submitted 2 entries. First entry: Combilass A consisted of Ervin, Noni, Noria, Siew Har and myself. Our Chinese folk dance entitled "Admiration of Tea Mountain" won a consolation prize - a product voucher worth 150 Ringgit to purchase electrical products at an authorised agent.

Combilass B consisted of Hui Tsin, Auda, Ming Chu, Siew Har, Norolhasanah and myself. Our dance entitled "Love Song" using chachacha steps also won a consolation prize - a food voucher worth 80 Ringgit.

Nothing big about the prizes. They were not meant to be. It was not a public party. The important thing was everyone in the party had an enjoyable time.

Miri and Lawas Social Integration

After 2 years of formation, the dance group of the Miri Che Sing Khor Moral Uplifting Society was ready to receive her first dance group visitors from Lawas. Nelly and me doing "Sing with Love".

Want to learn dancing?

10-14 November 1991

Folk and Line dancing? That was alien to me when it was introduced in Miri. I have gone dancing with friends and I just shake to the music and if it was ballroom music I just let the men lead me. There were 2 teachers from Singapore and on this 1st course, my love for dancing grew. It was fun learning folk dances of different countries. I learnt how to use a scarf to dance.

24-29 May 1992

Teachers Victor and Hanny came again to teach us at this 2nd dance course. I learnt how to use a fan to dance.

6-11 November 1992

3rd dance course conducted by teachers Victor and Hanny again. I don’t have any pictures of the previous 2 courses but I have for this one. Here are some of them.

Listen to what the organiser and the teachers are saying!

Let's do a circle dance.

Let's do a scarf dance. Gosh! My scarf is too short and stiff!

Graduation Time!
